Choosing a Bed.

It is usual for any tissue injury to be worse in the morning because your circulation is not quite so efficient when you are still for a long period. But is your bed helping or is it part of your problem? A good bed will generally last about 8 - 10 years - Is it time to change yours?

The mattress should be supportive enough to take the weight of the body without sagging, with sufficient give to support and cushion the body's bony curves.

There is no evidence to suggest that a firm mattress is any better at helping to deal with back pain. Remember that "orthopaedic" often just means hard.

Try to opt for a company that allows you to trial the mattress for a few weeks. 20 minutes lying fully clothed in a shop is not an effective way to choose a mattress. If you have stayed somewhere and found the mattress comfortable, look at the make of mattress.

It's worth spending as much as you can afford on something that you spend a good proportion of your life in. Restorative sleep is an essential component to good health.
